The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) is an international Catholic lay organization, founded in Paris in 1833, whose mission is to create "a network of friends, inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need." The Sacred Heart & Our Lady Help of Christians conference of SVDP assists neighbors in Newton and the surrounding communities with food, clothing, and housing-related expenses without regard for religion, race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. We work closely with social workers from the City of Newton, Newton Public Schools, the Newton Housing Authority, and Newton Community Development Foundation, as well as many other SVDP conferences and city and state agencies. With each request for assistance, our volunteers go out to our neighbor, meeting them in their home, to listen to their situation. The personal connection provided by this home visit is at the core of what we do, and it is greatly appreciated by the neighbors we serve and by our members.
Are You In Need of Assistance?
Are you in need of food, clothing, or housing-related assistance? Please reach out to SVDP by either phone (617-527-7560 ext 255) or email ([email protected]). Leave a brief message with your contact information and one of our volunteers will be in touch shortly.Would You Like to Support Our Mission?
Our work relies on private donations by individuals, organizations, and companies. As a group of volunteers with no overhead, 100% of donations go directly to assisting the needy and vulnerable in our local area. If you'd like to support us in our mission to help neighbors in need, we thank you! You can donate online at our PayPal page or by check. Please make out the check to "Society of St. Vincent de Paul" and mail it to:
St. Vincent de PaulWould You Like to Get Involved?
We welcome new members - called Vincentians - to our conference. There are many ways to get involved - as a home visitor, helping organize events (such as clothing drives and our annual Friends of the Poor Walk), or volunteering at the holiday meal drives for Easter, Christmas, and Thanksgiving. We have a particular need for an Intake Coordinator, who makes the initial call to our neighbor in need and schedules home visits. If you are interested in volunteering, we'd love to hear from you! Please email [email protected].
